01 — Why Bowen
Why Bowen Physical Therapy May Help

Bowen Therapy is a non-invasive Physical Therapy suitable for everyone — from the very young, elderly or frail, to extremely fit sportspeople and athletes — and it can help with a wide variety of conditions.
Bowen Therapy can provide improvements in symptoms which are persistent or not fully responding to other treatment. Many clients have approached Bowen having tried other avenues and are amazed that it has been effective at relieving even chronic pain, tension and restrictions, improving alignment, and restoring the body's natural balance and function.
As Bowen Therapy treats the whole body — a holistic technique — it considers old injuries and issues as a whole, not just the site of immediate pain, as the problem often originated elsewhere in the body.
It is also effective at relieving a wide range of issues beyond musculoskeletal problems, such as Respiratory, Sleep, Digestive and Hormonal issues.
Often these issues are intertwined and have built up over a prolonged period. As Bowen works at a deep physiological level, it can bring longer-lasting relief than more forceful adjustments. It is also deeply relaxing and triggers the body's natural parasympathetic (rest / repair / digest) state — with far-reaching benefits.

03 — Your Visit
What to Expect in Your Treatment

- 01
Comfortable, gentle moves
Bowen moves are designed to be comfortable — there is no deep or prolonged pressure. Almost all moves can be made through light clothing while you lie or sit.
- 02
Wear light, loose clothing
A light t-shirt and lightweight loose trousers or shorts are ideal. Avoid jeans or lycra — the moves are difficult through heavy or tight material.
- 03
Tailored to you
Before your first treatment you'll complete a brief medical history. We'll ask about significant injuries, operations or falls — old injuries in one part of the body are often the root cause of pain elsewhere.
- 04
A confidential chat
You'll have the chance to discuss any areas of pain, when they occur and how they affect your life. Information is treated in confidence and in accordance with GDPR.
- 05
Pauses that do the work
Between sets of moves the therapist leaves short breaks — these allow vital communication between body and brain via the nervous system, stimulating the parasympathetic 'rest and digest' response for deep relaxation and a more effective treatment.

05 — Frequency
Follow-up Treatment & Frequency
Whilst clients always have the option of attending only once, it is generally more effective to have at least 2 or 3 treatments around a week apart. The first session is principally about assessment and seeing how the body responds to core moves; the follow-up is a more specific treatment based on that response — they work hand in hand.
Each session typically lasts 45 minutes — the first is closer to 60 minutes. In most cases any changes will be observed in the couple of days following treatment.
Some people need less treatment; others — with more prolonged or complex issues — may need more. It depends on how the individual responds. Improvements may be permanent for some, while others may need a top-up months later, or if they reinjure the area.

06 — The Method
The Bowen Technique — What is it exactly?

The Bowen Technique began in Australia in the 1960s and is now practised in many countries. It is a holistic neuromuscular bodywork therapy applied to specific areas of the body. Using their fingers, therapists make short, rolling movements over the skin, usually through clothing.
The moves manipulate the fascia (connective tissue), which in turn affects the underlying tendons, muscles and organs. They aim to alleviate pain and tension, and rebalance the body's nervous system, aiding realignment and restoration.
Bowen moves are made primarily over muscles and have a specific effect on fascia — the tissue that surrounds muscle fibres and organs, containing a vast communication network of electrical and mechanical impulses. Some moves correspond to known acupressure points, while others stimulate proprioception, lymphatic drainage or the nervous system.

07 — About
My Qualifications & Background
I have taken a personal interest in various physical therapies and associated practices for many years, in an attempt to help with my own long-standing musculoskeletal issues.
Around 5 years ago I discovered Bowen Therapy, and was amazed at how effective it was for my own issues. I became increasingly interested, eventually leaving a long career as a professional consultant to commit to Bowen Therapy full time — and qualified as a Bowen Therapist with the College of Bowen Studies in 2024.
I have gained supplemental qualifications in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology, and further specialist training in related areas.
